78 Derngate

78 Derngate

78 Derngate was famously re-modelled by Charles Rennie Mackintosh in 1916 for his client, Northampton model engineer, W.J Bassett-Lowke.

Purchased for Bassett-Lowke by his father as a wedding present, the house had originally been constructed 100 years previously.

Take a visit and find detailed information about the interesting history of this small terraced house, the visionary owner and its radical transformation by Mackintosh.

Enjoy this short fun and informative video about 78 Derngate, an award-winning historic house set in the heart of Northampton.

The ONLY house in England designed by the great Charles Rennie Mackintosh, commissioned by the model toy maker W.J.Bassett Lowke.

W.J Bassett-Lowke, former owner of 78 Derngate and patron of Charles Rennie Mackintosh was a great enthusiast for contemporary design and technology.

His second home, New Ways, was the first modern house in Britain.

Fittingly he used up to date cinematography techniques to showcase the house.

This short (silent) clip extends its reach across more than 80 years into the social media era.

78 Derngate is a gem of a tourist attraction waiting to be discovered. Only one hour away from London and junction 15 or 15A on the M1.
